BEAR CANYON MINE - Active Operation, Permit ACT/015/025

Bear Canyon Mine is located on the eastern edge of the Wasatch Plateau Coal Field approximately 9.5 miles west of Huntington, Utah. Bear Creek flows past the Bear Canyon Mine and is a perennial tributary to Huntington Creek which flows into the San Rafael River.

Mining at the Bear Canyon Mine began between 1896 and 1906. Co-Op Mining Company acquired the Bear Canyon area coal leases from Peabody Coal Company in 1975 and re-entered the old Bear Canyon Mine workings in 1982. The current permit area encompasses 1,531 acres and the mining method used is room and pillar. The Blind Canyon, Hiawatha, and the Tank Seams are being mined currently with annual coal production of approximately 500,000 tons per year.
