Deer Creek Mine

DEER CREEK MINE - Active Operation, Permit ACT/015/018

The Deer Creek Mine is located within the Wasatch Plateau Coal Field, approximately 15 miles west of Huntington, Utah. This mine encompasses approximately 18,000 acres with a combination of fee, federal, and state leases. The Deer Creek Mine is part of PacifiCorp's East Mountain lease holdings which includes two adjacent mines, Cottonwood/Wilberg and Des-Bee-Dove. Coal production from the East Mountain leases has exceeded 100 million tons. Coal mining operations occurred on fee land in Deer Creek Canyon prior to 1946 when the first federal coal lease was issued in this area.

PacifiCorp acquired the Deer Creek Mine in 1977 from Peabody Coal Company, which had acquired leases on East Mountain, and began operations in 1969. The longwall method of mining at the Deer Creek Mine produces over 4 million tons of coal annually from the Blind Canyon Seam. Coal produced from the Deer Creek Mine is used to produce electricity at the Carbon, Hunter, and Huntington power plants.
