GORDON CREEK #2, #7, AND #8 MINES - In Reclamation, Permit ACT/007/016
Gordon Creek #2, #7 and #8 Mines are located in the Wasatch Coal Field, approximately 10 miles northwest of Price, Utah. The site is in the Upper Gordon Creek drainage and has a permit area of about 2,300 acres.
Mining began in the North Fork of Gordon Creek in the early 1920's. Swisher Coal Company opened the Swisher #1 Mine in the 1960's on the south side of Bryner Canyon. Swisher Coal Company was purchased by General Exploration in 1974, and was subsequently sold to Beaver Creek Coal Company (a subsidiary of ARCO) in January 1980, which eventually changed its name to Mountain Coal Company.
Room and pillar mining was used in the Castlegate "A" and Hiawatha coal seams. Mining ended in November 1990, and reclamation began in the fall of 1995, and is almost completed.
