SKYLINE MINE - Active Operation, Permit ACT/007/005
The Skyline Mine is located in Eccles Canyon in the northern Wasatch Plateau Coal Field, approximately 5 miles southwest of Scofield. The mine leases straddle the drainage divide between upper Huntington Creek and Pleasant Valley Creek Basin. Utah Fuel Company, a subsidiary of Coastal Corporation owned this mine until December 1996 when it was acquired by Canyon Fuel Company, LLC, which is jointly owned by ARCO Coal (65%) and Itochu Corporation (35%).
The federal leases for the Skyline Mine are in Carbon and Emery Counties and share a boundary with Sanpete County to the west. The permit area is 10,358 acres and consists of the #1, #2, and #3 Mines. Construction began in 1980. The #3 Mine began production in October 1981, and the #1 Mine in June 1982. A ventilation breakout portal was opened from the #1 mine into the South Fork of Eccles Creek in 1989. Development of the #2 Mine began in 1992.
Longwall mining methods are used in the 3 different coal seams and the annual production is about 5 million tons per year. Associated with the mines are a coal conveyor down Eccles Canyon, a unit train loadout at the mouth of Eccles Canyon, and a waste rock disposal site at an abandoned contour mine in Union Pacific Canyon east of Scofield.
