SOLDIER CANYON MINE - Active Operation, Permit ACT/007/018
The Soldier Canyon Mine is owned and permitted under Canyon Fuel Company, LLC. Canyon Fuel Company is jointly owned by ARCO Coal (65%) and Itochu Corporation (35%). Until the most recent change in ownership (which took place in December 1996), the property and associated reserves were known as Soldier Creek Coal Company with mining taking place at the Soldier Canyon Mine under the ownership of Coastal States Energy Company.
The Soldier Canyon Mine is located in the Book Cliffs Coal Field approximately 12 miles northeast of Wellington, Utah. Initial prospecting was conducted on the property as early as 1906, however actual mining via hand loading methods did not commence until 1935. The limited production from the mine was initially sold as home heating coal in Carbon and Emery counties.
Current production from Soldier Canyon Mine is approximately 1,200,000 tons per year via continuous mining methods conducted in the Sunnyside and Rock Canyon seams. Overburden thickness ranges from approximately 100 feet under Soldier Creek Canyon to over 2,000 feet above a number of panels to be mined.
The Soldier Canyon Mine also controls the coal reserves in Dugout Canyon located east of the existing operation. Permitting activities are currently underway to commence mining activities in Dugout Canyon where mining is planned in the Rock Canyon and Gilson seams. Longwall mining is currently being evaluated for the remaining reserves.
The permit area encompasses about 7,800 acres and is comprised of state, and federal leases; and fee properties.
