Wellington Prep Plant

WELLINGTON PREP PLANT- Inactive, Permit ACT/007/012

Wellington Coal Cleaning Plant was completed in 1958 by the United States Steel Corporation. It was located on Corporate land near Wellington, Utah and west of the Price River adjacent to the Denver and Rio Grande Western Railroad. The Operation and Reclamation Plan permit was approved January 17, 1984. Ownership transferred from U.S. Steel Corp. to Kaiser Steel to Castle Valley Resources and to the current owner, NEICO in 1994.

The Wellington Prep Plant received raw coal from the Somerset Mine in Colorado by rail, and processed this coal into a reject product and a clean coal product. The clean coal product was shipped by rail to the Corporation's Geneva Steel Works in Orem, Utah.

This prep plant used water to clean and process the coal but the operation was a closed system to conserve and maximize use of water. No water was discharged to the Price River or off-site, but reused.

Wellington Prep Plant facilities were demolished in 1997, and the site is being reclaimed.
